The Head of the Sonbai Kecil Dynasty was known as The Raja (Liurai) of Sonbai Kecil. Sonbai was the royal lineage in the Atoni area of West Timor (interior) which was the most prestigious. The other Atoni kingships are related genealogically to this Dynasty.

Since, the Raja (Liurai) of Sonbai Kecil belonged to the old Sonbai (or Sonbait) imperial dynasty (in Dutch klein Sonbait), he was the most important of rulers of federated Kupang

This Kingdom was first recorded in European sources in 1649, when it was an initial ally of the Portuguese.
